Syracuse Rodent Removal Tip:
Are Cats Good at Keeping Rats Away?
For thousands of years, humanity has bred the ultimate pest detection system. Or so the theory goes. I'm talking of course about cats. These feline friends have long stalked our urban areas hunting for the dreaded rat. It's likely how cats became domesticated in the first place.
But in the modern era, is there any truth to the idea that cats keep rats away?
The answer is more complicated than it seems.
On the surface, the answer seems obvious. Cats are adept at hunting and are often found dragging dead birds into houses. Therefore, cats should also be pros at catching rats. But there's a big difference between wild cats hunting rats and their pampered equivalents.
To a cat, mice are easy prey. They're small and unassuming. And best of all, they don't fight back. With rats, the story is different. These rodents are highly aggressive and are likely to bite. That isn't to say cats can't kill rats; if pushed cats would kill rats with almost one-hundred percent success. But for the cat, the encounter isn't worth the bother.
So, cats are useless at catching rats? Well, there's more to the story.
A New York Tail
Research from New York found that when released into a recycling center, cats killed very few rats. Only two were reported dead throughout the trial. However, there was definitely an effect. Over the 79 days of the experiment, microchipped rats displayed radical changes in behavior. Rat sightings dropped in the presence of cats. These rodents spent much more time in hiding than out in the open. In the natural world, this can mean longer stays in their burrow. This alone can prove to be valuable.
Elsewhere in New York – a city famed for its rat population – store owners routinely use cats to keep rats off their premises. Considering rats present a risk of food contamination, such methods are cheap and reliable.
Anecdotes abound about how the introduction of cats led to a marked change in rat populations. Once stores regularly lost stock to rat infestations, following a cat's purchase, everything changed.
Rat-catching cats
Historically, cats served several useful roles as a rat-catcher. Farm or barn cats live outdoors in barns and other outbuildings. Their job was to hunt for vermin, preventing the loss of crops to the rodent population. To this day, many farmers keep cats to catch rats and mice.
Another popular location for cats was on ships. Almost every ship had a cat that would control the rodent population. Rodents were a significant risk on ships, chewing through the stores or ropes. They also carried diseases. Therefore, for the superstitious sailors, traveling without a cat aboard was considered bad luck.
The recap
In short, cats are pretty useless at catching rats. They aren't interested. Suppose you've got mice, fantastic. But otherwise, you won't see many dead rodents. However, the very presence of a cat can function as a natural deterrent. Rats will avoid cats at all costs, spending much longer in hiding. Though it hasn't been tested, such behavioral changes also imply that cats' presence could stop rats from residing in an area entirely.
So, get a cat, by all means, just be aware of the expected results.
